In Richard Arkwright, Samuel Need and Jedediah Strutt built the world's first commercially successful water-powered cotton spinning mill at Cromford, Derbyshire, developing a form of power that was to be a catalyst for the Industrial Revolution. The beginning of the next century saw Derby emerging as an engineering center with manufacturers such as James Fox, who exported machine tools to Russia.

Derby has remained a major center for both light and heavy engineering works in the UK until today. Derby is located on the central lowlands of England, and is just south of the Derbyshire uplands Peak District region. It was not until the Bronze Age that real signs of agriculture and settlement were found in the county. In the moors of the Peak District signs of clearance, arable fields and hut circles were discovered after archaeological investigation.
